Crochet Adult size Booties (slippers)

This article will give you clear instructions for crocheting a pair of slippers (bootie style) for any size foot. These booties are quick and easy to make, and are ideal gifts for babies or adults. For beginning crocheters, this is a good starter project.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Basic knowledge of crochet (see link below)
  • Worsted weight yarn 3-4 oz (less for children)
  • Crochet hook size I
  • Yarn needle
  • Size of foot in inches
  1. Step 1

Measure the foot from heel to end of big toe.

Here are the abbreviations used in the pattern:
    • ch = chain
    • st = stitch
    • sc = single crochet
    • hdc = half double crochet
    • dc = double crochet
    • sl st = slip stitch
    • BLO = back loop only
    • FLO = front loop only

  2. Step 2

You need to make the slipper one inch longer than the foot.
Multiply 8 by number of inches needed, then add 4. This is the number of chain stitches needed to start.
    [Example: foot is 8 inches long. Add 1 inch = 9". 8 multiplied by 9” = 72, plus 4 = 76. Starting chain will be 76 stitches]
    Chain {your #}.

  3. Step 3

Hdc in 2nd chain from hook, and in each chain across. Chain 2, turn.
Hdc in each st across. Chain 2, turn. (repeat for 1 more row)
Hdc in BLO in each st across, chain 2, turn. (repeat for total of 7 rows)
Sl st in next 21 st.
Added 2-14-09: If you are making booties of a different size (especially if they are small) Slip stitch about 1/4 the number of starting chain; then leave this many unworked at the end of the row.
Hdc in BLO across, leaving 21 st unworked at end of row.
    Chain 2, turn.

  4. Step 4

    CUFF:
Hdc in BLO in each st across, chain 2, turn (for total of 3 rows).
Dc in BLO next st, then dc in FLO next st, then continue to alternate dc in BLO with dc in FLO across. Finish off.

Fold piece in half matching edges. See illustration.

Using same color yarn and yarn needle, sew indicated sides together on wrong side.
Form toe by weaving yarn in and out the end stitches completely around toe, then pull ends together to close toe. Finish off.

  6. Step 6

Turn right side out. Chain 2 strands of yarn together to make a tie long enough to weave in and out of double crochet posts at top of cuff, and long enough to be able to tie in a bow if desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • machine washable and dryable (but, do not wash with linty clothes or linens)
  • Add 2/14/09: To make smaller booties, besides reducing the number of starting chain, you can also use a smaller hook; and/or reduce the number of rows worked.
  • may be slippery on tile floors. To add traction to the bottom sole, use dimensional fabric paint (found in a hobby or fabric store) to put rows of wavy lines or some design on the sole.

on 10/19/2009 Has anyone had to change their hook size? My foot measured 9 1/2 in. chain was 88, the bootie is 13 in.
long, before sewing toe closed. Love the pattern but she didn't give us a gauge so did I mess up?
