Depression Era Chocolate No Egg Yum Yum Cake

An old fashion Depression Era Chocolate Cake made with no Eggs! Just Like Grandma used to make!

This is a delicious, rich-tasting cake thanks to the cocoa, and is terrific for anyone who might be allergic to eggs.

The cloves give it an extra-nice flavor.

Great to freeze, and have on hand when you offer to "bring a little something."

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 Squares chocolate
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • Frosting:

  • 1/8 lb butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • Few tablespoons milk
  • Pinch Salt
  1. Step 1

Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl, until smooth. You can either use a mixer, or mix by hand.

    Pour into a loaf pan.

  2. Step 2

Bake 350 for 3/4 hour or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

    Cool.

  3. Step 3

Prepare frosting, mixing all ingredients together. Add milk by the tablespoon, until desired consistency is achieved.

    Frost cool cake.

Tips & Warnings
  • My Mother-in-Law said eggs were rationed during the Depression in the 1930s. This favorite cake is old-fashioned, and everybody loves it. You can smell it cooking because of the cloves.
