Eat a Healthy Chocolate Diet
Eat a Healthy Chocolate Diet

Nowadays, it seems like everyone and their mother wants to lose weight. The old adage is that if a dieter wants to lose weight, then eating chocolate is forbidden fruit. Well, my dieting friends, today is the day to forget you ever heard that terrible dieting advice and start losing weight by--you guessed it!--eating chocolate. (And chocolate flavored drinks are on the list as well!)

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a nearby grocery store
  • money to buy chocolate
  1. Step 1

    **Chocolate Yogurt**

From dark chocolate to white chocolate flavors, yogurt has never tasted better! At most yogurt cups coming in at under 200 calories, it's a low calorie way to get in your protein and calcium daily requirements. Some chocolate yogurts also add fruit to the mix; if not, you can always add your own fresh fruit.

In the mood for a chocolate yogurt with a lighter, fluffier texture? Try one of my favorites: Yoplait Whips! Chocolate Mousse Style yogurt. (Kroger sometimes has this yogurt on sale for 50 cents a cup.) I also really like Trader Joe's low-fat chocolate cocoa yogurt--I swear, it tastes too rich to be healthy (but it is!).

  2. Step 2
    Chocolate waffle

    **Chocolate Chip Waffles**

Eating one chocolate chip waffle will set you back 120 calories (for most brands). You not only get a low calorie treat, but will also get in nutrients like calcium, iron, and vitamin A.

  3. Step 3
    Chocolate cereal

    **Chocolate Cereals**

Scroll down the cereal aisle at any major supermarket and you'll find several variations of chocolate cereal. Cereal manufacturers have wised up and most offer relatively healthy products.

My favorite chocolate cereal is Special K's Chocolatey Delight. This low calorie, low fat cereal is a dieter's dream with its toasted flakes and chocolate bits. Plus, like most cereals, it contains added nutrients that your body needs. This cereal is pricey, so I recommend stocking up when it's on sale and using coupons, if possible.

  4. Step 4

    **Chocolate Pudding**

Ranging in calories from 60 to 130 per cup (depending on whether it's sugar free, contains candy/cookie bits, etc.), pudding is a rich and creamy way to satisfy a chocolate craving. Mixing in fresh fruit adds a healthy sweetness. I like to chill sugar free chocolate pudding for a healthier alternative to ice cream.

  5. Step 5
    Chocolate coffee

    **Chocolate Coffee**

There are a variety of chocolate flavored coffees on the market, from Mocha to Dark Mayan Chocolate. General Foods International has a Swiss White Chocolate coffee mix that I drink almost every day. I add a few drops of liquid Stevia for added sweetness. This coffee is absolutely satisfying and has only 70 calories per serving.

  6. Step 6
    Chocolate tea

    **Chocolate Tea**

I came across chocolate tea while browsing the aisles at Trader Joe's. It has zero calories. I repeat, zero calories. (Yay!) It is a Trader Joe's brand, though. If you don't have a Trade Joe's near you, doing a Google search for 'chocolate tea' will bring up other brands of chocolate tea. I like to sometimes add a bit of milk and liquid Stevia to bring out the richness of the chocolate tea.

  7. Step 7

    **Chocolate Dip**

Walden Farms makes a variety of products that are calorie free. In all honesty, their calorie free chocolate dip does not taste as good as the real chocolate, but it is calorie free. And, as a dieter trying to lose weight, a calorie free chocolate dip may be just the thing to get your weight loss moving again.

I use this dip on fruit (especially bananas and strawberries) and on crackers. Use just a little or else the flavor is too strong.

  8. Step 8

    **Chocolate Soda Pop**

I couldn't skip out on mentioning this classic diet drink. Faygo makes a no calorie soft drink that is chocolate flavored. I've tried it and it's actually better than you might expect. In an effort to increase your weight loss, it's worth trying this calories free pop. (However, please note that some people report experiencing weight gain when adding diet soda to their diet.)

Another option for chocolate soda pop is to buy carbonated water and add a few drops of chocolate flavored liquid Stevia. I have not tried this, though; it's a concoction I kept coming across during a search for liquid Stevia recipes.

  9. Step 9

    **Fattening Chocolate**

Sometimes chocolate substitutes don't work. When your body is craving fattening chocolate, it may be best if you just give in.

BUT you need to do so responsibly. If you tend to binge on chocolate, then don't buy a big package of whatever you're craving. Buy a single serving size. If there's only a big bag, then immediately throw away the extra chocolate. (Seriously, it's not considered wasteful if all you would have done by keeping the extra chocolate around is binged on it.)
