In order to survive as a small business in today's marketplace, you have to engage in marketing strategies that will give you an edge above your competition. This article outlines some key strategies to help you effectively market your small business.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Determination
  • Patience!
  1. Step 1

Be sure to align every activity of your business with your overall vision and/or mission statement. Learn how to say "NO" to activities, investments, etc. that have the potential to distract you away from focusing on things that promote the overall mission statement of your business. This will help you keep a clear sense of direction.

  2. Step 2

Be as ORIGINAL as you can in everything that you do. Your uniqueness will help you and your company be more memorable, which will in turn help you to establish your brand, which can lead to greater market share. Be unique in your approach, in your logo, in your corporate philosophy, etc...even though "thinking outside of the box" is now a cliche, it still applies to this area.

  3. Step 3

Network, network, network. Don't overlook ANY potential contact. Even if you meet someone that cannot directly help you, they may know someone who can.

  4. Step 4

Become known as a subject matter expert in your field. Establish credibility in your profession by writing articles, conducting seminars, volunteering for certain related activities, etc.

  5. Step 5

Be able to summarize your entire business in one brief sentence. Clarity and simplicity is essential when explaining your business to others, especially potential investors.

  6. Step 6

Make sure you have a plan before you start marketing. Who is your target audience? What is your promise to them? What should they expect from you? Be precise and focused with your marketing efforts.

Tips & Warnings
  • As with all things worth having, this will take time to develop. Be encouraged; stick it out; don't let life kick your butt. You will have setbacks, but be determined to outlast whatever comes your way.
  • Don't enter into business without a plan. It will ultimately cost you time and money if you don't think the process through.
