Squirrels love to steal home insulation from walls and attics. Here's how to stop them before they tear your home apart.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Squirrels love yellow fiberglass insulation. They carry it in their mouths and use it to warm their nests in the winter. They also nest inside walls in that fluffy yellow stuff.

  2. Step 2

Although it they're cute little animals, squirrels really can cause a lot of damage to insulation by stealing fiberglass.

  3. Step 3

The first step to take is to develop a more aggressive attitude toward squirrels. Define your space. If you see a squirrel outside, scare it away by making noises and moving toward it. Don't be permissive toward problem squirrels.

  4. Step 4

The most human way to deal with problem squirrels is to trap them in Havahart traps. These are available in large sizes from hardware stores and online.

  5. Step 5

Bait the trap with peanut butter or bread and leave it where squirrels are bound to find it.

  6. Step 6

Only bait the trap on days when you'll be around to supervise it. Animals can die from shock in a Havahart if left alone for more than a few hours.

  7. Step 7

When you catch a squirrel, take it far away in a car. Drop it far from anybody else's house, too. A nearby wilderness area park is perfect squirrel habitat.

  8. Step 8

If you have obvious holes in your rafters or walls where squirrels are getting in, staple chicken wire over the openings. Plug cracks with self-expanding foam sealer.
