Even if you aren't from Alaska, you can still catch king salmon in Alaskan rivers, or while saltwater fishing.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

You'll need to buy two licenses. One is the Alaska Fishing License. The second is called a King Salmon Stamp. The licenses are sold by the amount of days you want to fish. Buying one of each license for one day costs $30, for seven days $85, and both annual licenses combined cost $245 for an out of state resident. There are also 3 day and 14 day licenses.

  2. Step 2

You can fish with or without a guide. It's advisable to fish with a guide at first, even if you are going to fish on your own later. They'll teach how to fish for kings.

  3. Step 3

A basic guided king fishing trip is about $150 and up for river fishing. Guides provide an entire fishing rod setup for every client to use. When you go out with the guide, pay close attention to how they fish. You'll need to learn their techniques if you want to catch something for a reason other than luck. You may need to make a reservation online to fish with the most popular guides in the most popular spots, like the Kenai Peninsula.

  4. Step 4

If you do land a king, keep it only if you can freeze the fish right away. Keep only what you can use. Otherwise, take a picture and let it go.
