Step 1
Look for a half moon edger with somewhat of a sharp edge. A dull, thick edge will never cut easily, but the edge doesn’t HAVE to be razor sharp to work well.
The handle should be sturdy and the blade should be attached firmly to the handle. No wiggling or rocking. -
Step 2
Find the garden edge where you want your grass to end and the garden bed or the sidewalk to begin.
Stand on the lawn, facing the bed or walkway. Position the edge of the blade and the tool perfectly perpendicular, holding it straight up and down with the blade 90 degrees to your body. -
Step 3
Step down firmly on the edge of the "moon" and rock the blade to the left and to the right to get the fullest cut.
-
Step 4
Keep the blade in the cut; pull the blade towards you, just like you were scooping back on a shovel. This will help dislodge the strip of grass away from the rest of the lawn.
