Step 1
Start a bedtime routine within the first few weeks at home. You can begin with a bath (it doesn't have to be real long), then a feeding, and then do some cuddling for a few minutes.
-
Step 2
Keep stimulation to a minimum when your baby gets up to eat at night. You can do this by feeding him/her in a quiet, low lit setting. I always changed my babies diapers while their bottle was warming so after they had a full belly and had burped, we could snuggle for a moment before I put them back into their crib.
-
Step 3
Teach your baby to put themselves to sleep. This is key to keeping your baby asleep through the night especially when they get older. Babies tend to wake up through the night even if they aren't hungry but if they can put themselves back to sleep you won't have to get up. Use any of these or a combination: binki, dim light and soothing music, and as your child gets old enough let them have a favorite blanket or toy.
-
Step 4
Within two to three months, your child should be developing their own natural sleep cycle. Some babies get confused with their nights and days but you can help them by keeping them in the light and stimulating them during the day and putting them to sleep in a dark room. They will also be ready to fall asleep for the night at a certain time. Learning to read your babies specific signs will help you get your baby in bed before they become overly tired.
