Things You'll Need:
- The desire to discuss politics online
- A website, forum, or blog to use as an outlet
-
Step 1
Do Your Homework
It's important to study not just your own political side, but the other side as well. Make sure you're aware to common misconceptions about your party's or candidate's stances so you can answer objections as they occur. -
Step 2
Focus on Issues, Not Personal Attacks and Rumors
The quickest way to turn people off to your point-of-view is to attack a candidate or side on something that has little or nothing to do with important issues. In fact, I've seen personal attacks that make the candidate the author thinks they're "supporting" look bad. -
Step 3
Be Ready for People Who Passionately Don't Agree With You
Most normal people are respectful in their feedback, even if they don't agree with you. Others will try to get you upset or cut you down purely because they don't agree with you. -
Step 4
Add Personal Examples and Explain Concepts People May Not Be Familiar With
I learned about our tax code for example, but to explain the differences between two candidates I had to explain the existing system first. Personal examples allow people to relate to the issues and the concepts.

on 11/17/2008 Are you familiar with this thread concerning the question if Mr. OBAMA was actually born in the U.S.?

on 10/17/2008 Good tips for discussion. We get into some pretty heated political debates over on Hubpages, but most of the people are civil and share their opinions respectively.

on 9/16/2008 Very helpful. It's important to keep a thick skin while discussing politics online. I tend to get flustered and give up. haha.
