Here's how to find the perfect name for your new company.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • The internet
  1. Step 1

Congratulations! You've taken a step forward in an independent life and decided to start your own company. Now you have to think of the name. This isn't as hard as it sounds.

  2. Step 2

Naming your business is a lot like naming a band. You need a name that is original, iconic, and long lasting. Above all, it should describe exactly what your business is.

  3. Step 3

Your name should be appropriate to your type of business. A consumer should instantly know what product you deliver from a mile away. Think of this example: Jack Johnson LLC vs. Jack Johnson Photography.

Which name is better? The first name could signify any service imaginable, but we know right away in the second name that the service is photography.

Here's another example: Jack's Place vs. Jack's Hometown Diner.

The first name is way too vague, and sounds like a scary bar. The second name sounds like a friendly hometown restaurant.

Be as specific as possible and think class not trash. People will make snap judgements about a business based on it's name alone.

  4. Step 4

In certain trendy neighborhoods and cities, you can have a more obscure or ironic name. However, you are going to be under scrutiny to fulfill that trendy image. Only use trendy names if you expect to be well integrated into the marketing of a trendy area.

In general, ultra-trendy names either fail, or are adopted into a more complete branding package, such as Zoo York Footwear. The brand is marketed both as Zoo York and as Zoo York Footwear.

  5. Step 5

Find out what all the competing businesses in your area are named. You'll want your name to be like theirs, only better.

Google up some random cities to find what similar businesses to yours (that you will never compete with) have named themselves. Borrow some of those ideas to give your business an edge over your competitors.
