Things You'll Need:
- Knowledge on how to play the flute
- money
-
Step 1
Ask your teacher which features to look for. I suggest that you buy a flute with open holes, a B foot, a solid silver head joint, and a good brand. Good brands are Yamaha, Emerson, Sonare, Gemeinhardt, Haynes,
-
Step 2
Determine your price range. A good open hole flute is usually $400-$3,000. Any flute less than $100, I would wonder what is wrong with it. Any more than $3,000 is a really expensive flute.
-
Step 3
Find a store that sells flutes. If you shop online, find a store with a guaranteed return policy. You can try out the flute and if you don't like it you can send it back. Otherwise you would be stuck with a flute that you don't like. Buying new or used is a matter of personal preference.
-
Step 4
Ask a sales associate for help. They will help you find a flute that is in your price range. Ask for specific brands. Look on the underside of the head joint for an inscription with what the head joint is made of.
-
Step 5
Try many flutes. A flute should feel comfortable to play, and sound pleasing. Some flutes will be easier to play than others. Even flutes from the same manufacturer might not sound or feel the same.
