You can't burn green (recently cut) firewood in a wood stove. Here's how to season (age and dry) firewood so it burns easily.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

One way to season wood is to place it in a pile and cover it with a tarp. Depending on the climate, it will dry out and be ready to burn in a year or two.

  2. Step 2

A more sophisticated way to season wood is to cross stack it in a wood shed. This provides more air flow to the wood than just covering a pile of wood with a tarp. Cross stacking wood also prevents rot from occurring on the bottom of the wood pile.

  3. Step 3

Split the wood (if it isn't already) after it has seasoned. It's very difficult to split green wood, so wait until it dries.

  4. Step 4

Wet wood is different than green wood. Seasoned wood can get rained on, wet, and not burn. This does not mean the wood is green. If you have seasoned wood that's wet, spread it outside on a few sunny summer or fall days. Wet wood dries out in a couple of days.
