Find Government Grants For Writers

Finding government grant funds to write can be tricky but with the right resources it is possible. Funds are available for both the new and well established writer. Learn where to look to find government grants for writers.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with internet connection.
  1. Step 1

For writers interested in writing educational material to raise awareness or to inform on humanitarian issues the National Endowment for the Humanities may be a place to start looking for government funds. For more information go to www.neh.gov and research under the types areas you have interest in. Many grants are given to the inexperienced writer.

  2. Step 2

The largest grants for writing are through the National Endowment for the Arts. Categories for writing funds are varied and can be found for fiction and non-fiction writing. To find a list of grants available go to www.nea.gov/grants/index.html. In general grants tend to be given to the most experience or deserving writer for the grant applied for.

  3. Step 3

If your writing takes you to the great outdoors or environmental causes you may be able to find government funding through the National Park Service. Grants are usually given to the most experience applicant in the field not just the best writer that applies. Go to www.nps.gov for more information.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pay special attention of grant guidelines before applying. Many applicants are dismissed for grants because they do not follow guidelines. Remember to proof read before turning in your application.
