How to Communicate Effectively and Clearly

Effective communication is important in every aspect of life. It allows people to get their needs met, conveys confidence, empowers self and others, and can help prevent many problems. To communicate stronger, clearer, and more effectively, avoid these phrases.

  1. Step 1

    Avoid using the words "honest" and "truth" in your conversations because it implies that up until that point you have been dishonest, even if you have been telling the truth in your communication. For example, do not say, “Let me be honest with you,” or "To tell you the truth."

  2. Step 2

    Minimize statements that convey uncertainty or inability to use your communication through your thoughts. Speak with certainty. Statements that make you sound uncertain include "kinda," "sorta," or "wanna." These would be considered wishy-washy, but they have slipped into many people's vocabulary.

  3. Step 3

    Do not use the statement, "I'll try." Either you will or you will not, but trying can be misinterpreted that you will not follow through and can be interpreted as an inability to commit. Instead, use statements with details. For example, instead of saying "I'll try," it would be better to give solid information like, "I have to work, however I will call you if I cannot make it." This may not seem too different, but it comes across clearer and more effectively.

  4. Step 4

    Avoid the expression, "I have to...." Values influence choices and sense of duty, but everyone has a choice although you may think there's something you have to do. Using the phrases "I need to..." or "I am..." are clearer, convey intention, and are more personally empowering.

  5. Step 5

    Stop saying, "you know," or "you know what I mean?" This phrase has slipped into many vocabularies, but should be weaned out. One way to reduce it is to speak clearly then pause briefly rather than saying the phrase. The pause gives the other person a chance to ask you a question or clarify. When you are speaking effectively the other person or group will know what you are talking about, at least that's the hope.
