How to Boost Your Creativity

How to Boost Your Creativity thumbnail
Creativity comes in many forms.

Creativity may be natural, but that does not mean it comes naturally to everyone. You can boost your creativity by broadening your horizons and taking on habits that some naturally creative people utilize. Leveling up your creative thinking takes time and dedication, especially when teaching yourself something that comes naturally to others.

Instructions

    • 1

Expand your area of expertise. To be creative, you must broaden the subjects that you are exposed to. Read books outside of your expertise or general interest. Take on multiple projects on multiple topics at the same time to teach your brain to bounce ideas off one another. Rather than follow a procedure that everyone else is doing, try to create your own by utilizing a new technique or even an old technique that no one uses anymore.

    • 2

Learn from life's mistakes and events. Take a failed attempt as a lesson, rather than a defeating moment. Admit your mistakes when they are pointed out to you and allow yourself to recognize and hear them from others.

    • 3

Start socializing outside your normal group. Broaden your friendship circle to different careers, cultures and even ages. Watch how other people interact in their day-to-day life and what steps they take to be creative in their own ways. Listen and communicate effectively with friends, family and coworkers. Take advice and seek input on methods they would use to tackle an issue that you are facing. Make note of the different methods people use to solve the same issue you are working on.

    • 4

Use brain-boosting exercises from books or the Internet that specifically focus on spontaneous idea-making, logic and reason -- these will help increase your divergent thinking, which is a main component of creativity.
