This procedure will improve your target shooting dramatically with a simple to implement change in technique. I will illustrate the change using diagrams I've drawn showing the typical bullseye target and the equally typical open sights on a pistol.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bullseye Pistol Targets
  • Pistol with Adjustable Sights

Refer to Figure 1. This is the most commonly sought after sight picture. Concentrate on the front sight, bring the top of the front sight to the bottom of the black and fire when ready. With adjustable sights the pistol should hit the middle of the bullseye target.

  2. Step 2

Refer to Figure 2. A common result of using this technique is that the black front sight merges and blurs into the black circle of the target causing your shots to strike above and below the center.

  3. Step 3

Refer to Figure 3. This diagram shows a pistol that is targeting 2 white rings below the bottom of the bullseye. Using this lower hold technique, it is much easier to maintain that white spacing between the top of the front sight and the bottom of the bullseye, than it is to maintain directly at the bottom of the bullseye. You defeat that blurring problem that is very common and shown in Figure 2.

  4. Step 4

The final change is to adjust your sights to compensate for the lower hold.

Tips & Warnings
  • I made this change in my own target shooting years ago. It is my understanding that Olympic target shooters use this technique. You will definitely improve your shooting and it's real easy to implement.
