Become a Professional Freelance Cartoonist.

A professional freelance cartoonist is more then just drawing cartoons in a newspaper a couple time a month. It is about creating the image of professionalism and generating work that stands out. Learn how to become a professional freelance Cartoonist.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Creativity.
  • Story telling and writing skills.
  • Passion as a Cartoonist.
  1. Step 1

Unleash your creativity. If you are going to make it in the professional world of a cartoonist your work must stand out from the rest. No one want to see a look alike from another cartoon, create something that is unique.

  2. Step 2

Polish your writing skills. A cartoonist must offer more then a nice sketch, the cartoon must tell a story (verbal or nonverbal). Along with drawing classes, try taking creative writing classes at a local community college to spruce up your cartoons.

  3. Step 3

After developing a creativity and a unique edge in writing, create your own style. This may take a little trial and error. The idea behind this is that if someone was to be your valued reader they would be able to distinguish your work from anyone else's.

  4. Step 4

Put together a portfolio of your original work to distinguish yourself as a professional freelance cartoonist. A polished portfolio will go allot further then a poorly put together portfolio that looks rushed.

  5. Step 5

To promote your work, join professional web sites, forums and niche associations. Networking online and off line is key to creating a successful freelance career. You may also consider creating a blog or website to showcase your work. Write articles and create cartoons for various sites to become looked at as a expert.

Tips & Warnings
  • As a freelancing cartoonist you usually are able to keep all right to your work. You may able to sell the same cartoon many times. Just check with submission guidelines and with any contracts you must sign before releasing your work.
