Things You'll Need:
- Creativity.
- Story telling and writing skills.
- Passion as a Cartoonist.
-
Step 1
Unleash your creativity. If you are going to make it in the professional world of a cartoonist your work must stand out from the rest. No one want to see a look alike from another cartoon, create something that is unique.
-
Step 2
Polish your writing skills. A cartoonist must offer more then a nice sketch, the cartoon must tell a story (verbal or nonverbal). Along with drawing classes, try taking creative writing classes at a local community college to spruce up your cartoons.
-
Step 3
After developing a creativity and a unique edge in writing, create your own style. This may take a little trial and error. The idea behind this is that if someone was to be your valued reader they would be able to distinguish your work from anyone else's.
-
Step 4
Put together a portfolio of your original work to distinguish yourself as a professional freelance cartoonist. A polished portfolio will go allot further then a poorly put together portfolio that looks rushed.
-
Step 5
To promote your work, join professional web sites, forums and niche associations. Networking online and off line is key to creating a successful freelance career. You may also consider creating a blog or website to showcase your work. Write articles and create cartoons for various sites to become looked at as a expert.
