How To Prepare For Hurricane Season !

Living in the South being prepared for Hurricane Season is a part of life . Hurricane Season is from June 01 through November 30. This tips and information are helpful for more situations then Hurricanes.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Water
  • Food
  • Blankets Pillows etc
  • Specialty Items for babies or elderly
  • Clothing
  • First Aid Kit, Perscription Drugs
  • Extra Cash
  • Important Documents

  1. Step 1
    Binder

    Collect all your important Documents and place them in a Binder and Plastic Sleeves that can be found in most Office Supply Stores or you Supermarkets . It makes it easier when you have to evacuate . If you have a All in One Printer you can scan your documents and burn them on a CD or USB Stick for Backup.

  2. Step 2

    You can also scan family picture that can't be replaced and burn them to a CD. It is easier to transport then a lot of photo albums. Another solution is a online photo storage if you concerned about your privacy you can password protect the photo albums you don't want strangers to see them.

  3. Step 3

    Make sure your insurance information is up to date and if you have questions about your homeowners insurance and/or flood insurance call your insurance agent to explain your coverage. This will avoid the nightmare of finding out that you are not covered.

    If you not planning to evacuate check your prescriptions and refill them if needed. Make sure you have water and non perishable food for 3 -5 days. A good cooler will keep things cold for up to 5days. If you own a Outdoor grill stock up on Charcoal or refill your propane Tank.
    Fill up your car and extra Gas Cans. Don’t forget Power is usual out during and after a hurricane from a few days to weeks , with no power the ATM will not work so withdraw some extra cash for emergencies.

    Have you cell phone charged and a car charger is a good idea to keep it working until power returns. Portable Generators make life easier if temperatures reach in the 90s, but not very cheap . A thought when you build a new house a good idea to include a full house propane Generator.

  6. Step 6

    Check the Local Weather and the Weather Channel regular for Hurricane Track updates. You local TV and Radio Station has updates on Shelters and emergency Information's including phone number that are helpful . Have a evacuation plan in place before the hurricane reaches your area. Don't forget your pets ! You can check with Hotels that allow pets and a pet carrier is helpful. Make sure your Children are aware of your Hurricane and Evacuation plans and who to contact should you get separated. Have additional Emergency contacts ( Grandparents, Siblings or close friends )

    DON'T wait until the last minute !
    Your local store has large storage totes they work great to store hurricane supplies and to pack the things you can't replace . Protect your windows with Plywood or Plexiglas that can be found at your local hardware store.
    If you are a renter consider a small trailer or at least pack the things that are expensive to replace like kitchen appliances , electronics , your computer and don't forget about clothing . Take picture of the things you own and have a update household inventory check online or when you go shopping what the prices are to replace , this information helps when you file your insurance claim.
