Step 1
Find the International Standard Book Number or ISBN for the textbooks you need. Sometimes, the ISBN is included on the syllabus or book list. If not, do a quick Internet search for the book title and ISBN.
-
Step 2
Go to one of the websites listed below (in References) and search for the textbook you need through the ISBN. This is important because many books have the same title, but may not be what you're looking for.
-
Step 3
Swap books online, instead of buying them. If you have some textbooks that you no longer need, maybe you can swap with others who have what you need. Swapbooks.com is a popular site for exchanging books.
-
Step 4
Go to the school or campus bookstore. The school bookstore often has the required textbooks, but usually at a higher cost. They do also buy back used books at the end of the school year, so it is worth it to check out what is available in the used section.
-
Step 5
Locate the school bulletin board. There may be former students (or parents) trying to sell old textbooks. Some schools have physical bulletin boards, and some are online. You may be able to purchase textbooks quite cheaply.
-
Step 6
Search on places like FreeCycle. Perhaps someone is willing to give textbooks away for free.
-
Step 7
Go to local used bookstores in your area. Stores like Half Price Books offer used textbooks at deeply discounted prices.
