Waiter corkscrews are one of the more conventional wine openers and get their name because of their portable size. Additionally, they are the only corkscrews that come with a built-in knife to help you open any wine bottle or any other bottle with a cork.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bottle with a cork
  1. Step 1

Pull out the knife from the waiter corkscrew. The knife is usually at the bottom of the corkscrew as pictured here. Only perform this step if your bottle has foil surrounding the cork that needs to be removed.

  2. Step 2

Hold the corkscrew with your hand in a position where your thumb is placed on the top of the knife so you can apply pressure.

  3. Step 3

Place the knife at the upper-most part of bottle's neck and apply pressure to the knife to break the foil.

  4. Step 4

Retract the knife so it is no longer outside of the corkscrew.

  5. Step 5

Turn the bottle while continuing to apply pressure to completely cut the foil at the top of the bottle. When done, remove the foil.

  6. Step 6

Pull out the worm (the twisted metal part) from the corkscrew and place the point in the middle of the cork.

  7. Step 7

Turn the corkscrew clockwise while pushing down on the cork and corkscrew to insert the worm into the cork.

  8. Step 8

Pull out the arm on the corkscrew and position the corkscrew itself so that the arm can rest on the lip of the bottle. This may involve unscrewing the worm from the cork slightly to get the corkscrew in the right position.

  9. Step 9

Hold the neck of the bottle and the arm of the corkscrew firmly when it is on the lip of the bottle.

  10. Step 10

Grab the opposite side of the corkscrew (the side without the arm) and lift up. Remember to hold the neck of the bottle, and the arm will act as a leverage point to lift the cork out of the bottle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to hold firmly onto the bottle at all times to prevent the bottle from slipping.
  • This article does not guarantee that you will be able to successfully open a corked bottle. In order to successfully open a bottle with this type of corkscrew, either practice or ask someone with knowledge regarding this type of corkscrew to assist you.
