Choose a Band Choose a band for your ring: white gold or yellow gold. Silver is used, but it's not as common. Choose what you like most and move on to the opal itself.

Find an Opal You LikeFind an opal that you like. Opals come in many colors, from a translucent white, to pink, orange, blue, green, yellow and brown. The rarest opals are red and black. If you study the white stones, you'l notice that many of them have small amounts of other colors in them. Keep in mind, again, that opals are very soft, so they can be cut into just about any shape or style you like.

Choose a Design StyleChoose a style for your opal. As opals are very versatile, they can easily be made into any type of ring you like, so consider all your options and look around for the one you feel best suits you. You can get a solitaire opal, or a single opal accented with diamonds or some other stone. Choosing to accent a lightly colored opal with another stone of that same color will accent the opal's color just as accenting a brightly colored opal with a gem like a diamond, which doesn't have much color, will make the opal stand out, drawing attention to its uniqueness. You can use more than one type of opal or cut it into different shapes and patterns.

Find a Quality Opal RingSince opals are soft, choose a ring that’s rounded as it's less likely to break than a pointed one. Also, choose an opal that has a bright hue. I don't mean that white isn't valuable, but the flecks within the white should be bright and clearly visible. Likewise, any color within the stone should stand out clearly, so be sure you're choosing a stone that's valuable as that will increase the value of your ring.
