Zsnes is one of the best SNES emulators available. Like all console emulators, it has the ability to save game states outside of normal in game saves. You can save your game anywhere and anytime, making it extraordinarily useful. But opening a save state isn't the same as opening a game save.

From Quick Guide: Classic Console Gaming
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Open Zsnes.

  2. Step 2

Load the SNES game with the save state you wish to open. Go to the GAME scroll menu and click "LOAD." Choose the folder where the game file resides. Click "LOAD" or double-click the game. The game will now load in the Zsnes window.

  3. Step 3

Press "Esc" to get back to the Zsnes menu.

  4. Step 4

Choose a save state. Click "GAME" on the scroll menu. Click "PICK STATE." There is a space for 10 saves numbered 0 to 9. Select the number your game is saved under, then close that window.

  5. Step 5

Open the save state. Click "GAME" on the scroll menu. Click "OPEN STATE."

  6. Step 6

Press "Esc" to get back into the game. If you saved your game state correctly, your save state should load with a message that says: "SAVE STATE (number from 0 to 9) LOADED."

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember which number you saved your game's save state under. Write it down if you have to!
