Step 1
Make a list of your priorities. Jot down how much your budget is, the gas mileage you would like to shoot for and the special features you are looking for your vehicle to have. Rank them by level of importance.
-
Step 2
Research websites that specialize in information for used car shoppers. Vehix is a popular one, as well as Edmunds and Auto Trader. These sites will help narrow the search of the type of car you want to buy (see Resources below).
-
Step 3
Visit used car lots to get ideas. It is always a good thing to check out your options before actually buying the car. Seeing a car in person always helps when figuring out whether or not you are going in the right direction. You could even take one you like for a test drive.
-
Step 4
Check out newspapers or local online classifieds. Numerous people post ads in these outlets. Do not be afraid to call (or email) them if you have questions about a vehicle. Also, you may want to ask for the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) so you can run a report on its history. Running a Carfax history report may cost a small amount of money now, but will give you peace of mind and save you money in the future (see Resources below).
-
Step 5
Make your decision. Once you have narrowed down your options, make an offer. If accepted, ask what type of payment they desire. Paying in cash is not recommended if you buy a car outright. Go to your bank or credit union and have a cashier's check made so you have a record of your purchase.

Step 6
Enjoy your purchase and safe driving!
