Set aside a budget for lodging. There's no end to how much one can spend on a luxury hotel room in New York City. Conversely, there are just as many surprising bargains in hotel stays at places you might not think of. Before you plan your trip, decide how much of your trip budget you want to spend on lodging. If a big part of the enjoyment you get from traveling is relaxing in your hotel room, allocate more money to the hotel. If your idea of fun in New York City is going out and about, and you look at your hotel as simply a place to lay your head at the end of a busy day of sightseeing, set your hotel budget lower.

Decide what part of town you want to stay in. While the majority of New York City's hotels are in the midtown area, there are hundreds that are off the beaten path as well. Different neighborhoods offer access to different sides of New York City. In the Meatpacking district, there are many hip, new hotels that are just a stone's throw from many of New York City's hottest and most popular nightclubs. In Soho, there are luxury hotels that are situated in the heart of New York City's couture fashion district. In the Financial District you can stay in a hotel that is equidistant from the thriving heart of Chinatown, Little Italy and many of New York City's oldest and historic buildings and sites (see Resources below).
