Sure, you can raid the candy aisle at the drugstore or grab a chocolate bar at the movie theater, but there are times when only the best will answer for a real chocolate craving. Phoenix is home to an ever-growing range of independently owned restaurants and food retailers, some of which cater just to chocaholics. When you want to step out of the ordinary and into the sublime, visit one of these chocolate retailers in Phoenix.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Travel northwest of Phoenix to the bedroom community of Surprise, Arizona where you’ll find Chocolate Surprise, a gourmet candy shop. Artfully created chocolate treats are displayed and changed seasonally, just like fashion, with a new selection arriving to herald each season. Inside the store, customers are also shown the origin and process of candy making via a big screen television with instructional DVD. Expect to spend around $1.50 for each piece, or upwards of $35 for a box of 24. For an ultra splurge, customers can choose a specially designed Zen box that holds 32 pieces of chocolate in a pagoda-type structure for $120.

  2. Step 2

Opt for a visit to the Sweet O Wine and Chocolate Lounge in Phoenix where you can pair a glass of wine with a selection of handmade truffles and outrageous desserts. Sweet O Wine offers a selection of about 30 truffles with flavors like Earl Grey tea and ginger along with custom designed desserts as pretty to look at as they are good to eat. The selection of truffles average $1.50 apiece and varieties change each day.

  3. Step 3

Visit one of the Valley of the Sun’s half dozen AJ’s gourmet markets for a sweet tooth fix. Their in-house truffle maker features hand dipped treats, chocolate-drizzled scones and muffins and displays like chocolate fountains. Chocolate truffles, cakes and other candies can also be special ordered.
