Do a Spinning Figure 8 With a Nunchaku

Nunchaku are weapons used by almost all martial art styles (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) and are called by many different names, such as nunchucks, chucks, and chain sticks. There are many different types and materials used in nunchaku, but they all involve two sticks attached at one end each by a chain or cord. Learning how to use nunchaku looks cool, is fun to do, and can be used to keep an opponent at bay.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Grip the nunchaku firmly, but not too tightly, with your fingers and thumb wrapped around one of the wood sections. Your thumb and index fingers should be closest to the center of the weapon, but still off the chain or cord--this is called the low-grip position. Your arm should be extended in front of your body with the second wood section dangling downward.

  2. Step 2

Start with your palm facing inward. Roll your wrist so that your thumb moves low and your palm faces the outside of your body.

  3. Step 3

Drop your arm across your body, dipping the hand close to your waist. Bring your other arm inside, close to your chest.

  4. Step 4

Allow the loose end to swing with the movement as you bring the hand up toward your shoulder.

  5. Step 5

Roll the palm of the hand up from facing the ground, up to the ceiling.

  6. Step 6

Allow the loose end to come over the top as you cross your body and drop your hand toward the opposite hip. Roll the palm of the hand back toward the floor.

  7. Step 7

Bring the hand back to shoulder level. The loose wood section will swing with momentum now.

  8. Step 8

Repeat steps 2-7 to continue doing a figure 8 with nunchaku.

Tips & Warnings
  • As you become better doing the figure 8, you can tighten the movements to be smoother and faster.
  • Go slowly and practice, practice, practice. If you go too fast, you'll be out of control and will most likely whack yourself with the nunchaku--it hurts.
