Spin a Nunchaku Around One Hand

Nunchaku are fighting sticks used in most traditional martial arts, like Korean, Japanese and Chinese. They were made popular to the general public in the 1970s by Bruce Lee. Nunchaku can be made from a variety of materials, but they all consist of two sticks connected by a chain or cord. There are many names for nunchaku, such as sticks, chucks, and nunchucks. Learning to use nunchaku is fun, super cool and can help you fend off an opponent easily.

Instructions

How to Spin a Nunchaku Around One Hand

  1. Step 1

Grip the nunchaku firmly, but not too tightly, with your fingers and thumb wrapped around the one wood section. Your thumb and index finger should be closest to the center of the weapon, but still off the chain or cord--this is called the low-grip position. Your arm is extended in front of your body with the second wood section dangling downward.

  2. Step 2

Start with your palm facing downward. Swing the loose wood section quickly toward the thumb and index finger, allowing the chain or cord to move in the direction of wrapping around the back of your hand. As you do this movement, also start to move your hand in a small tight circle upward, following the trajectory of the loose wood section.

  3. Step 3

Continue movement--as your hand reaches the top of its tight circle, the chain or cord will be close to touching the back of your hand. Open your fingers to drop out the held wooden section. You're essentially letting go of one stick and catching the other stick in motion.

  4. Step 4

Continue the circle downward. As the chain wraps around the back of your hand, this will continue the circle downward. The loose wood section will wrap under your hand, swinging into your palm. Close your fingers around this section upon impact.

  5. Step 5

Allow the loose stick to continue its momentum around the circle.

  6. Step 6

Repeat the steps (1-4), but follow them in a reverse direction to get you back to the starting position.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice, practice, practice. This movement may seem difficult at first, but with plenty of practice, you'll soon be able to look super cool with your nunchaku. In time, you can integrate this movement with other nunchaku movements for the purpose of changing grips.
  • Take it slow at first and move with control. If you start too quickly, your movements will be become too wild and you'll end up hurting yourself.
