How to Tie a Square Knot for Boating

The square knot is an easy to tie knot that can be used to secure anything. This a popular knot used in sailing as well. Once mastered, you will find yourself tying square knots in everything, not just ropes. Follow the steps and pay attention to the illustrations to learn this handy knot.

  1. Step 1

    Grab both ends of the rope and make a overhand twist. Make sure you tie the right rope over the left rope.

    Make another overhand knot above the first, being sure that this time the left rope goes over the right.

    Tighten the knot by pulling on both ends until snug.
