Food can take a huge bite out of your travel budget if you let it. It's natural to want to indulge when you're away on vacation. But no one enjoys coming home to a pile of exorbitant bills. Here are some ideas for eating well while spending less.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

When planning your trip, consider a vacation rental house or condo. This will provide you with a full kitchen and give you the option of cooking some of your own meals. If that is not possible, find a hotel/motel room with kitchenette or at least a refrigerator and microwave. If all else fails, bring along a cooler.

  2. Step 2

Before you go, purchase an Entertainment Coupon Book. You can order the entire book of coupons for dining, shopping and sightseeing in and around your destination. You can subscribe to the online service, which allows you to print out just the coupons you want to use (see Resources).

  3. Step 3

When you arrive at your destination, visit the grocery store. Stock up on snacks such as fruits, nuts, cheese, corn chips and salsa, as well as light meal items like sandwich fixings, cereal, hot dogs and eggs.

  4. Step 4

Bring reusable water bottles. Keep them filled and with you as you sightsee. This way, you won't end up spending money buying water, juice or soda from a vendor or convenience store. For the same reason, carry snacks with you, such as a granola bars, a piece of fruit, or a bag of sunflower seeds.

  5. Step 5

If there is a pricey restaurant you are eager to try but not eager to blow the budget on, check into the lunch menu. Lunch prices are often considerably cheaper than dinner.

  6. Step 6

Take advantage of early bird specials for dinner. If you are on vacation, your schedule is more flexible, making a 5:00 p.m. dinner a possibility.

  7. Step 7

If you are unable to finish your entree, take it with you. It will stay fresh in the refrigerator back at your room and provide you with another meal or snack later.

Tips & Warnings
  • Strike up conversations with the locals. They will know where to find the best food at the best price.
  • Do your research. Before you go, do an Internet search using the name of your destination and words like "discount," "coupons," "budget" and "cheap."
  • Stay away from restaurants in and around tourism hot spots. It is tempting to end your morning at the museum with a luncheon in their elegant dining room, but you might end up paying top dollar for the convenience.
