Step 1
Cross the Potomac River to the Virginia town of Arlington for one of the most moving and emotional sites the area has to offer: the famous Arlington National Cemetery. The seemingly endless rows of white headstones are quite a sight. The Tomb of the Unknowns, honoring unidentified soldiers killed in various wars, is another impressive site, as is the eternal fame at the grave of President John F. Kennedy.

Step 2
Drive south or take the Metro to the city of Alexandria. The old city boasts some of the most beautiful Colonial brick buildings around. Alexandria offers a touch of the modern as well, with wonderful shops, cafes and restaurants.

Step 3
Step back into history and see the home of the Father of the Country, George Washington. Mount Vernon has been completely restored to its former glory. The home is open (with an admission charge), but the true beauty is on the grounds.

Step 4
Travel about 90 minutes south of Washington, D.C., to the lovely city of Charlottesville, Virginia. This town at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains was home to Thomas Jefferson. His home, Monticello, is open to the public for a fee and is worth every penny. Once your visit is complete, check out the University of Virginia campus just down the road. Charlottesville offers a wide range of activities and is a calm and peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of Washington.
