How to Make a Barbarella Halloween Costume

Although the movie is decades old, Jane Fonda’s “Barbarella” continues to be one of those fantasy characters that men can’t seem to get enough of seeing. Perhaps it is due in part to the futuristic aspect of her story, but the real reason has much more to due with her sex appeal. Therefore, this sexy siren is the ideal choice for any woman looking to spice up an all-adult Halloween party.

• Long, curly wig
• Dance leotard
• Opaque tights
• Sheer poncho or bed jacket
• Sheer fabric
• Knee high to thigh high boots
• Trim (braid, sequins, or lace trim)
• Jewelry
• Make-up
• Toy ray gun

1. Buy a long, curly wig and/or hair extensions if long hair isn’t natural to the person who will wear the costume.

2. Set the hair, extensions, or wig in soft waves that curl at the end. Part of Barbarella’s appeal was her luxurious tresses.

3. Find an old dance leotard. The color really doesn’t matter so it may be possible to use something already on hand. However, make certain that it isn’t too revealing. If a leotard isn’t in the closet, shop for one at local department stores or boutiques that carry dance attire.

4. Choose opaque tights. Since leotards tend to be a bit skimpy in nature, tights will help to keep everything in check. Choose the same color or a complimentary color to the leotard. Adult leotards can be found in many department stores and on many Websites.

5. Shop for a sheer poncho or bed jacket; preferably one that matches the leotard and tights. Thrift stores are one possible source. However, lingerie stores often offer a broader range of options. If you cannot find one, move on to the next step.

6. Borrow or purchase knee high to thigh high boots if they aren’t already in the closet. The color should match or compliment the rest of the costume.

7. Apply make up. Create heavy lined eyes and glossy lips. Be generous with your application of make up for this character.

8. Pick subtle jewelry like small to medium sized hoops or diamond studs. Choose a big, cocktail ring. Add a long chain around the neck. Don’t overdo the jewelry. Keep it plain and simple.
