Choose a Peach

There are few fruits more delicious than a perfectly ripe, juicy peach. Unfortunately, this fruit is seasonal and fickle. Often, the excitement of finding peaches out of season is canceled out when you bite into a peach that may look good, but is dry, mealy and flavorless inside. Here's how you can pick a perfect peach every time.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look at size. You want a peach that is not much bigger than your fist. Huge peaches are appealing, but they turn out to be ugly on the inside. Don't be drawn in by the size; a smaller peach usually has more flavor.

  2. Step 2

Make sure the color of the peach is nicely marbled but more on the red side. Check for asymmetry, imperfections and bruises.

  3. Step 3

Hold the peach in your hand and lightly squeeze. The peach should give, but not too much. If it has no give, it is unripe. If the fruit feels like it could be destroyed by a tighter squeeze, it is too ripe.
