How to Do Lateral Box Jumps

Lateral box jumps exercise a wide range of lower body muscles. Performing them regularly can improve an athlete's speed, power and acceleration. By altering the height of the box an athlete can focus on either speed (with a low box) or power and muscle strength (with a high one).

  • Box between 1 and 2 feet high

Instructions

    • 1

      Stand on top of the box in an athletic position on both feet.

    • 2

      Jump sideways off the box, landing on one side on both feet.

    • 3

      Spring back off the ground, minimizing ground contact, and land back on top of the box.

    • 4

      Continue your momentum, jumping off the opposite side of the box and landing with both feet on the ground.

    • 5

      Spring back off the ground, minimizing the length of your ground contact, and land back on top of the box.

    • 6

      Repeat steps 2 through 5 without resting between reps.

Tips & Warnings

  • Steps 2 through 5 compose one repetition. Repeat for a period of time, or number of reps.

  • Good shoes and proper warm-ups will help you prevent injury during this or similar exercises.
