Adopt a Lhasa Apso Puppy

Originally from Tibet, Lhasa Alpso dogs make great pets. With their long, silky coats, however, they do need to be groomed regularly. Since the hair of the Lhasa Apso will grow to floor length, many owners choose to get the dogs clipped regularly so their hair will be more manageable. This breed of dog is very affectionate and loyal. Since they can bite if startled or upset, Lhasa Apsos are not recommended for families with very small children. They tend to work best as a sole pet, since they like lots of attention. If you are looking to adopt a Lhasa Apso puppy, there are many avenues you can take to find one.

Instructions

    • 1

Search for Lhasa Apso breeders in your area. Many breeders have websites where they will post photos of their latest litter of puppies. If a particular puppy catches your eye, contact the breeder regarding pricing and other specifics. You can then visit the puppies in person and observe the pup's personality.

    • 2

Read classified ads for your area both online and in the local newspaper. While breeders generally have online sites, individual parties are more likely to take out a traditional or online classified ad. Browse online sites such as Craigslist and your local newspaper for such ads.

    • 3

Take a trip to the humane society in your area. From time to time, they may have Lhasa Apso puppies up for adoption. Be aware that purebred puppies, as well as small dogs in general, tend to get adopted quickly, so you will need to check in often. If you have some flexibility on the purebred quality, you are more likely to find a Lhasa Apso mixed breed at the humane society.

    • 4

Interact with the puppy prior to adopting her. You shouldn't choose a puppy based solely on her looks. Take some time to play with her and ensure that you two are a good match. Most puppies will be lively and playful, though a few may be shy at first. Give the puppy time to come out of her shell and get involved with you.

    • 5

Make sure the puppy has had all of his appropriate vaccinations prior to adopting him. He should be vaccinated against worms, parasites, rabies and other common diseases that puppies contract. You will also need to get a license for your puppy.

    • 6

Walk your Lhasa Apso daily. While they are small, these dogs do have lots of energy. A Lhasa Apso works well in a condo or apartment, provided you take her on daily walks.

    • 7

Begin training your Lhasa Apso puppy while he is young. This breed haves a stubborn streak, so it's important to start training at a young age. Crate training is recommended, particularly to expedite the house-training process. Pepper your puppy with lots of praise during the training process, as he will respond well to positive reinforcement.

    • 8

Establish a regular grooming schedule. Since Lhasa Apsos have very long hair, daily brushing is imperative. You should also take your pup to a professional groomer every 3 months to have her toenails clipped and facial hair trimmed. For easier grooming, you can have her hair clipped short.

    • 9

Take your Lhasa Apso to the vet for regular checkups. This breed is particularly susceptible to ear and eye infections.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you have all the needed pet supplies before you bring the puppy home.

  • If you purchase a puppy from a pet store, be aware that some of those puppies come from puppy mills.
