Step 1
Educate yourself about the breed. Maltese are small dogs; usually they weigh between five and 10 pounds. They are smart and fun-loving. Because they are small and delicate, they may not be the right choice for a house full of children who could inadvertently injure the dog. Maltese do need exercise, but are happy with a nice walk around the block.

Step 2
Search www.petfinder.com, an internet shelter portal. There are many Denver-based shelters and rescue groups showcasing their adoptable animals on this site. If you find a dog that you are interested in, read and follow the adoption instructions. Most rescue groups will request an application, check references, conduct an interview and visit your home.

Step 3
Visit area animal shelters. Dumb Friends League maintains a listing of all Denver area animal shelters on its website and offers opportunities to foster animals. One way to rescue a Maltese would be to offer to foster Maltese dogs for Dumb Friends. Foster homes care for dogs and cats until a permanent adoptive family can be found.

Step 4
Talk with your veterinarian, groomer and kennel operator. Families that need to find homes for pets often contact their pet care professional for rehoming assistance. Discuss your desire to rescue a Maltese and they type of home you offer one of the little white fluff balls.

Step 5
Post an offer to rescue a Maltese on Craigslist. The pet section on Craigslist is where people who need to find a new home for a pet meet up with people looking for pets. Try to garner as much information as possible from the family giving up the pet. If possible, confirm medical information with a veterinarian.
