Make a Bender Mask

On the animated TV show "Futurama," Bender “Bending” Rodriguez is as likable as a selfish, chain-smoking, alcoholic robot can be. As Fry’s best friend, he may not always do the most thoughtful thing (he once threw Fry’s beloved dog, Seymour, into molten lava), but it always turns out to be the most hilarious thing. Follow this simple guide to create a Bender mask from a few bottles of paint and a piece of cardboard. As Bender would say, “It’ll be fun on the bun!”

Things You'll Need

  • Cardboard
  • Tempera or acrylic paint (dark gray, light gray, white and black)
  • Exacto knife
  • String
  • Hole punch

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of your face so you can determine how long and wide your mask must be to cover it.

    • 2

Draw an outline of Bender’s face on a piece of cardboard using the dimensions you measured in Step 1.

    • 3

Cut out the outline using an Exacto blade. (Don’t forget Bender's antennae!)

    • 4

      Paint the entire mask gray.

    • 5

Draw two large circles for his eyes and paint them white.

    • 6

Draw round pupils inside each eye. (You will be cutting out these pupils later to see through.)

    • 7

Paint a black outline around the eyes and connect it across the face. This will create the binocular effect of Bender’s eyes.

    • 8

Draw a large white rectangle toward the bottom of the mask for the mouth.

    • 9

Draw a series of vertical lines within Bender's mouth with black paint.

    • 10

Draw two horizontal lines inside his mouth to create the grid effect of his teeth.

    • 11

Paint Bender's antennae at the top center of his head.

    • 12

Use a lighter gray paint to create dimension around his binocular eyes and around the edge of his antennae.

    • 13

Use an Exacto knife to cut out his pupils.

    • 14

Punch one hole on each side of Bender’s face to run a string through.

    • 15

Tie a string through each hole and tie the strings in the back of your head to keep the mask in place.
