How to Split Table Cells in Microsoft Word 2003

Editing tables in word processors, like Microsoft Word 2003, is easy to do thanks to the table editor included in this application. As opposed to having to create tables and edit them separately in a spreadsheet software application, now users are able to create complex tables and spreads inside of a word processor. The table editor allows users to make new table rows, cells and columns, and resize them, merge the cells and even split the cells.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Select the cell that you wish to split.

    • 2

Access the table menu. Scroll to the “Table” tab and then click on “Split Cells.”

    • 3

Select the split cells attributes. A split cells properties box will appear where you can set the split attributes. Determine the number of columns and rows you wish the cells to split into by entering the desired number into the corresponding fields.

    • 4

Uncheck the “Merge Cells Before Splitting” box if you do not wish to merge the cells together before you split them. This consolidates the data into one cell and then splits it.

    • 5

Split the cells. Click “Okay” to split the cells.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you split cells, make certain that the data is placed in the desired rows.

  • Splitting cells will not carry over any formulas into the new cells.
