How to Make a Laundry Basket Halloween Costume

Creating a laundry basket Halloween costume is inexpensive, since the only item you’ll need to purchase is the basket itself. This is a costume a child could make with minimal adult supervision, and it is something you don’t often see on Halloween. It's different from the normal Disney Princess or Power Ranger costume. This is also a costume an adult can pull off, simply by using a larger laundry basket. This costume can work for a male or female.

Things You'll Need

• Plastic laundry basket
• Suspenders
• Scissors
• Empty laundry detergent bottle
• Old clothes
• Black t-shirt
• Black pants
• Black marker
• Safety pins

Instructions

1. Draw a circle on the bottle of the laundry basket so you can cut a hole that's big enough to fit around your hips. It doesn’t need to be perfect, because no one will actually see the hole. But you want it to be comfortable.

2. Cut out the circle you drew and dispose of the plastic you remove. Make sure the basket fits over your hips. Trim as needed.

3. Use the safety pins to attach a few items of clothes to the suspenders. It is best to use smaller items, like undershirts, socks and boxer shorts. Larger items like jeans will add a lot of weight to the costume.

4. Put on the black T-shirt and pants. Step into the hole in the basket and pull the basket up until the bottom is at your hips and the top is just above your waist.

5. Attach the suspenders to the basket and adjust them so they fit comfortably on your shoulders. Put the rest of the clothes you collected in the basket.

6. Pull out one article of clothing and put it over you head like a hat. For a humorous look, use a pair of boxer shorts as your hat. Put the empty laundry detergent bottle in the basket, on top of the clothes.

Tips & Warnings

• On a particularly warm Halloween, girls can wear black shorts with tights instead of pants.

• If you don’t have an empty detergent bottle, it is not essential to the costume.

• Since the basket will be held up by the suspenders, an old basket will work just fine.

• Adult supervision is required when cutting the hole in the laundry basket.

• Make sure all the safety pins are secured before putting on the suspenders.

• This costume is bulky, so consider where you’ll be wearing it before deciding to go with this costume.

• This costume can also be hard to sit down in.
