Fire and water are the elements manifested in Pitta, one of the three mind-body types in Ayurveda. Ayurveda is a science that dates back to the India of 5,000 years ago, and provides detailed advice on diet and how to treat illness and disease. Pittas tend to be of medium build and medium weight, and may show their fiery nature via slightly red or ruddy skin. They are easily identified, as they are not skinny like Vatas or fat and chunky like Kaphas.Facials for a Pitta will emphasize cooling oils like avocado or coconut. Under Ayurveda, it is recommended that people do a daily oil massage, and this can be incorporated into a facial.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Cleanse the face with a mild soap, such as glycerin or liquid chamomile, that is free of any overly spicy fragrances, like cinnamon. Use warm water to cleanse and progressively cooler water to rinse, finishing with very cold water. Pat dry.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the facial oil that will be applied to the face and left to penetrate the skin. In a small, non-reactive stainless steel, glass or ceramic bowl, combine the coconut and avocado oil. As an option, you can add mint, rosemary, clove and tea tree essential oils. Blend.

  3. Step 3

Evenly apply the facial oil to all areas of your face and neck. Avoid the eye area. Wrap a towel around your neck and chest to prevent any of the oil from dripping onto your clothing.

  4. Step 4

Massage your face and neck with clean hands, bending your index fingers to expose the knuckles. Gently rub your knuckles around the flesh of the cheeks and perhaps under the eyes. Do not use too much pressure. Use motions that move upwards. Use your palms to sweep up the front, sides and back of the neck.

  5. Step 5

Lie back and rest for at least 20 to 25 minutes. You might sip a cooling Pitta-pacifying tea made for your mind-body type, or drink kava kava or chamomile tea.

  6. Step 6

Rinse off the oily mixture, being careful not to aggressively scrub your skin, which can be aggravating to Pitta-type skin. Splash off with cool water. Pat dry.

  7. Step 7

Using a cotton ball, dab small amounts of jojoba oil on your face. If you like, you can mix the jojoba oil with very small amounts of avocado oil. Do not overapply, as these plant oils are heavy. If you are going into the sun, apply sunscreen.
