How to Make a Multicolor Crayon

Making a multicolor crayon is a fun and satisfying craft for children and adults alike. The project puts all those broken crayon pieces to good use so your little ones don't feel so bad about the breaks, and they are taking an active role in recycling, which is a feel-good bonus. Instructions

    • 1

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F.

    • 2

Peel the paper off the crayons and break them into 1/2-inch pieces.

    • 3

Cover the bottom of the cookie cutters with aluminum foil. Use three layers for best results. Shape the foil around the inside of the cookie cutter and over the top edges of the cookie cutter, as well.

    • 4

Fill the cookie cutters half full with crayon pieces.

    • 5

Place the crayon-filled cookie cutters on the cookie sheet and bake in the oven for 5 to 7 minutes.

    • 6

Remove the crayons from the oven and allow to completely cool before tapping the sides of the cookie cutter with a butter knife. Peel off the foil and enjoy your new multicolor crayons.

Tips & Warnings

  • Put together contrasting colors for bright, wild results, or use colors from the same family for a more muted crayon.

  • Basic shaped cookie cutters such as stars, hearts and squares tend to turn out better than something elaborate like a face with eyes and accessories.

  • Watch your time carefully and do not allow the crayon to liquefy. You just want the crayons to melt together and the colors to blend.

  • Never let a child use the oven alone. Always supervise children in the kitchen and keep them away from direct heat sources.
