One of the trickiest parts about beginning Spanish is the word "for." We only have one way to say it, whereas they use "por" and "para" both with similar, yet distinct meanings. Generally speaking, you can use "para" when referring to specific details and "por" for ideas and generalities.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use "por" in the following situations:General/non-specific time or place: Trabajo por dinero; Por la noche, Por allaInstrumental: por telefono, por correo, por barcoCause: Fue detenido por conducir borrachoPrices: Por cuatro dolaresIndefinite Anticipation: Estar por... Estoy por irme al cine.

  2. Step 2

Use "para" in the following situations:Limited/specific time or place: Trabajo para una empresa, Se fue para California, Viene para veranoOpinion: Para mi..., Para LuisDefinite Anticipation: Esta para lloverUtility: Fumar es malo para la salud

  3. Step 3

Immerse yourself. You won't be able to check back on this list every time you want to speak or understand Spanish. The best way to figure out how things are said is to constantly read or listen to Spanish to give yourself an idea of when and where to use "por" and "para."
