Step 1
The use of bear pepper spray is always the last resort in a bear encounter.
-
Step 2
During a bear encounter, bear pepper spray is used when the bear charges you, follows you or gets too close.
-
Step 3
Bear pepper spray canisters shoot from approximately 25 to 40 feet. If you spray the pepper spray while the bear is too far away, it will be ineffective.
-
Step 4
The entire canister will release into a cloud of spray in as little as 6 to 9 seconds.
-
Step 5
Aim for the bear's face. Pepper spray attacks the eyes and respiratory system.
-
Step 6
Keep in mind the wind direction as you spray at the bear. Pepper spray forms a cloud and can be carried by the wind.
-
Step 7
Keep the pepper spray on your belt, in a holster, not in your pack.
-
Step 8
Be careful not to spray yourself as you hike or camp. Bear pepper spray is dangerous, even during an accidental discharge. If you get pepper spray in your eyes, rinse them profusely with water for 15 minutes.
