How to Get a Handicapped Placard for Ohio
It's easy to get a handicapped parking placard in Ohio if you meet the specific criteria and follow the application guidelines. You will need to pay a small fee, agree to use the placard properly and have the cooperation and support of your doctor.

Ask your doctor if your disability qualifies you for a handicapped placard. He will know the criteria, which can include being unable to walk 200 feet, lung disease, portable oxygen, cardiac/neurological/orthopedic conditions or blindness.

Obtain the application from the Ohio Department of Public Safety Bureau of Motor Vehicles or your doctor's office, or download it from the Internet. (See Resources.)

Indicate on the application the type of placard you need, and note the fee of $3.50 you will need to submit with the paperwork.

Get a prescription from your doctor, chiropractor or advanced-practice nurse. Be sure they submit an original prescription, not a copy, and follow the application guidelines precisely.

Submit the application, prescription and fee to any local Deputy Register, or mail to the Ohio Bureau of motor Vehicles, Attn. Registration Section, PO Box 16521, Columbus OH 43216-6521.

Hang the placard on the rear-view mirror when you park your vehicle. Remove it when driving.
