How to Rename Digital Photos Automatically in Windows XP

Digital cameras have revolutionized the way we view photography. Instead of worrying about film as in the past, all you do now is point and shoot, then connect your camera to your computer and download the photos. This has increased the number of photos stored in hard drives, flash drives and other storage devices. It has also created the problem of how to rename all the photos with meaningful names.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your digital camera to your computer and download photos to the hard drive. Note the location of the photos in your hard drive.

    • 2

Open the folder containing your photos. The photos you downloaded from your digital camera in Step 1 appear. You can select "View, Thumbnails" if you wish to see the thumbnails of the photos.

    • 3

Scroll to the top of your Windows Explorer viewer (if you are not at the top) and select the first photo. You may have to click the photo or simply place your mouse on it to select it, depending on how your computer is set up.

    • 4

Scroll down to the last photo, hold down the "Shift" key on your keyboard and click or select the last photo. This selects or highlights all the photos.

    • 5

Scroll to the top of the viewer and right-click the first photo. Click "Rename" from the drop-down list that appears.

    • 6

Change the name of the first photo by typing in the new name. Hit "Enter" on your keyboard. Microsoft Windows XP will automatically apply the new name plus sequential numbers to all the highlighted photographs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Occasionally Microsoft Windows XP will pop up a warning message when you batch rename photos asking you to tell Windows the type of file you are renaming. If that happens, click "No" then scroll to your first photo and add a file-type suffix (.jpg, .gif, .png) to the file name.
