How to Make a Pumpkin Children's Halloween Costume
Pumpkins are cute symbols of Halloween that are perfect for young children. Here is how to make a simple, almost no-sew pumpkin costume that you can whip up minutes before trick-or-treating. It can be made for any size depending on how much fabric you use and the sewing technique is so simple, anyone can do it.
Things You'll Need
- 3 yards orange fabric
- Green felt
- Green pipe cleaners
- Polyester stuffing (the kind used for homemade pillows)
- Scissors
- Green ribbon
- Large yarn needle
- Safety pins
Instructions

1
Lay the orange fabric out on the ground and have your child step on the center of it.
-
2
Cut holes for the feet to slip through and pull the fabric up to the child's chest.
-
-
3
Cut arm holes, then have the child slip the fabric off again.
-
4
Use the needle to stitch the green ribbon around the edge of the orange fabric. This is just a simple in and out motion with the needle. Make the needle go in on one side of the fabric and make it come out on the other side. No need for the stitch to be perfect or straight. Make the stitches wide and far apart. Leave the ends of the ribbon dangling.

Put the fabric back on your child. Have her legs go through the leg holes and her arms go through the arm holes. Pull the ribbon so that it works as a drawstring to bunch up the fabric around the child's shoulders and rest on top of them. Don't pull it tight enough that it touches the child's throat and creates a choking hazard.

6
Put the stuffing inside of the fabric through the hole at the top. Make sure there is some in the front and in the back, making the fabric puff out into a round shape.
-
7
Cut some oval shapes out of the felt for leaves and safety pin them around the child's shoulders. Curl up some of the pipe cleaners and curl them around the ribbon in the orange fabric for vines.

Tips & Warnings
Have your child wear black leggings or tights and a black or orange long-sleeved shirt underneath the costume for comfort and warmth.
