Find a Purebred Puppy

There are hundreds of varieties of purebred puppies. Purebred puppies can participate in many different dog sports, and make good family companions. Finding a purebred puppy can be a complicated process, but can be accomplished with a little time and research.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Evaluate your lifestyle. Not every breed is suited for every type of family. High-energy breeds, such as border collies, need a lot of time and attention, while a mellower breed such as a greyhound can live happily with very little exercise.

  2. Step 2

Determine what breed of puppy you want. Study breeds you might be interested in to decide which are appropriate for you. The Dog Breed Selector Quiz can help you in your search (see Resources below).

  3. Step 3

Find breeders in your area. The American Kennel Club and Untied Kennel Club both maintain extensive breeder listings to use in your puppy search (see Resources below).

  4. Step 4

Look through local publications for purebred puppies. Many breeders sell their dogs locally, so the newspaper is a good search option (see Resources below).

  5. Step 5

Contact breeders you are interested in. Let them know your interest in the breed and set up a time to visit.

  6. Step 6

Visit each breeder to see his puppies in person. Hands-on time with each puppy is the best way to figure out which one is right for you.

  7. Step 7

Ask the breeder questions you might have about his breed. People who have been around a breed will be your best resource for answers.

  8. Step 8

Review any contracts and sign any required paperwork to take possession of your new purebred puppy. Finish any registration paperwork at this time as well.

  9. Step 9

Take the puppy to your vet as soon as possible to be sure you have chosen a healthy companion. Let your pup settle into your home and enjoy life with your new purebred puppy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose a healthy puppy from a reputable breeder. Many people breed purebred dogs, but do not have healthy dogs.
  • Do not choose a puppy on a whim. Having a dog is a serious commitment and you want to be sure you are ready for a puppy.
