Some women don't take long to get bored of their appearance. Television shows like “What Not To Wear” and “How Do I Look?” remind many that it’s time to update makeup and style, but how can you achieve a picture perfect look without access to the professional stylists? Follow five steps to give yourself a simple, affordable makeover.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Make a list of what you really want. Are you trying to hide the weight you gained this year? Highlight an hourglass figure? Draw more attention to your eyes? Write down your goals and what tips and tricks you remember from your favorite shows to make it happen.

  2. Step 2

Raid your closet. Step in front of a full-length mirror wearing some of your favorite wardrobe pieces and ask, “Is this really flattering?” Do the same with the shirts, skirts and pants that rarely see the light of day. Analyzing each item, determine what you should bring back to the front of the closet, and what should go for good.

  3. Step 3

Head to the mall. Now that you know exactly what pieces are staying in rotation, head to your favorite stores to compliment what you own and take your look to the next level. An old tank top or T-shirt can find new life when layered under a trendy blazer.

  4. Step 4

Play with the makeup you own. Getting new shades and products applied at a traditional makeup counter is overrated. Too often you end up with colors and styles that are either too drastic or simply do not reflect your personality and style. Sit in front of the mirror and try new color combinations and techniques to find subtle updates for a fresh new look.

  5. Step 5

Trade blushes and eye shadows with friends. The products you’re no longer interested in don’t have to go in the trash. Save money and update your inventory by swapping with friends.

Tips & Warnings
  • When getting rid of clothes that no longer fit or flatter, look into thrift stores or churches in our area where you can donate the pieces to people without the means to shop in traditional stores.
  • Stay positive. Just because your body has changed or your funds are low doesn't mean you can't find a fresh new look.
  • Don’t get too trendy. One modern piece per outfit is a good rule of thumb. It will keep you from having to toss your new clothes before they’ve officially worn out.
  • If trading makeup with a friend, look into sanitizing the products before giving them away. Otherwise the oils from your skin may cause her to break out.
