Chihuahuas are spunky, feisty small dogs. The breed originated in Mexico. Chihuahuas are very popular because of their small size and dynamic personality. Sadly, there are homeless Chihuahuas in animal shelters and rescue groups. Rescuing a Chihuahua will bring joy to your home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Educate yourself about Chihuahuas. If you have never lived with a Chihuahua before find out as much as possible about the breed to determine if this is the right dog for your family. Chihuahuas are small, some weigh only two pounds, most weigh between five and ten pounds. Because they are so small and delicate they can be injured by a clumsy toddler. Most homes with children under the age of eight will not be appropriate for dogs under ten pounds. Chihuahuas are energetic, they love to play and need exercise every day. Chihuahuas are protective and bark to alert. If you want to live with a quiet dog, a Chihuahua may not be the right breed for your family.

  2. Step 2

Contact your veterinarian and other pet care professionals. Veterinarians, groomers and kennel owners may be contacted by clients who need to find a new home for their pet. Let your veterinarian know that you are looking for a Chihuahua in need of a home.

  3. Step 3

Search for a Chihuahua on petfinder.com or other shelter portal. Web services such as petfinder.com allow the user to search by breed and location. If you find a Chihuahua in a rescue group or shelter that interests you, follow the directions provided by the rescue group or shelter. If you are trying to adopt from a rescue group, expect to complete an application, provide references, participate in an interview and possibly have someone visit your home.

  4. Step 4

Visit local animal shelters. Although Maryland shelters move small dogs and puppies quickly, it is possible to find a Chihuahua in an animal shelter. If you meet a dog that you want to rescue, act quickly. The dog may not be available in a few days.

  5. Step 5

Post a request for a rescue Chihuahua on Craigslist. It can be a valuable tool in your search for a rescue dog, but caution is necessary. Sadly, unscrupulous breeders and scam artists try to cheat people looking for pets. Ask questions and verify answers before committing to any dog on any general web community board.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take your new Chihuahua to the vet as soon as possible for a complete checkup.
  • Never wire money to anyone claiming to have a Chihuahua available for rescue. Sadly there are scam artists willing to prey on potential adopters.
  • Take someone with you if you are meeting a dog at someone's home.
