Keep your campsite safe with a portable electric bear fence.

Being attacked by a bear while camping in the wilderness is something many campers fear. Luckily, in the past few years portable electric bear fences have become available on the market for personal campers. These machines are not cheap and require a bit of work for setup. But if you are planning a trip in an area that is heavy in bear population, it might be worth the investment to get a little peace of mind.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase an electric bear fence from a camping supply store in your area or on the Internet. In June 2011, brands included Bear Shock and Electric Bear Guard. Fences come with poles, wire and a charger to use on your camping trip.

    • 2

Read the package instructions thoroughly before setting up your fence. Charge the energizer before using the fence. Place the four poles in the ground around the perimeter of your campsite. Use a hammer to push them into the ground well.

    • 3

Clear any vegetation that will be in the way of the wires. Connect the first wire to the energizer near the bottom of the pole. Stretch the wire to the second pole and loop it around once. Continue onto the third and fourth poles, making sure that the wire is taut. Continue back to the first pole and loop it around the pole. Repeat this with the second and third wires, making sure that they are evenly spaced. Clip off the loose ends at the first pole with wire cutters.

Turn the switch on the energizer and your campsite will be protected.

    • 5

Turn the energizer off before unwinding the wires and packing up the electric fence. Set it up at every campsite where bears are a danger.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bear fences do not work well in areas with tall grass, weeds or a lot of gravel. Place your campsite in an area where these elements are not present to ensure that your fence works effectively.
