How to Troubleshoot the Ignition System in a Chevy Cobalt

There's little a non-expert can do to test a Chevy Cobalt's ignition system. It's one of Chevy's newest models, so it uses a complex disributorless ignition system that only an expert should look at it. Changing the ignition coils and examining the spark plugs are the only things you should attempt yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Stiff brush
  • Ignition points file
  • Socket wrench
  • Replacement ignition coils

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the Cobalt's negative battery cable from its terminal. This is recommended before any maintenance, but especially any involving the electrical system.

    • 2

Check the spark plugs for wear and deposits. Clean the plugs thoroughly with a stiff brush and file the electrodes flat with an ignition points file. Make sure the ground electrode is parallel to the center electrode before installing.

    • 3

Connect a spark plug back to its wire after removing it from the engine. Ground the plug to a metal part on the car. Crank the engine and make sure there is a strong blue spark from the plug.

    • 4

Remove the ignition coils from their connectors and the retaining bolts, then remove the coils from the engine. Use a reverse procedure to install the new coils, tightening the retaining bolts to 89 inch pounds.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wear rubber soled shoes and gloves when working on electrical systems. Keep in mind that distributorless ignition systems can generate much more power than distributor systems.
